Over the years, myriad tributes have celebrated the legacy of the late, great Payne Stewart—a three-time major champion renowned for his throwback golf threads, captivating showmanship, philanthropy, and tremendous sportsmanship.
Probably the most iconic is the bronze statue of a jubilant Stewart celebrating his 1999 U.S. Open victory. The life-sized likeness, a selfie hotspot perched 50 yards from the 18th green of Pinehurst No. 2 where the event returns next year. It depicts the colorful and consummate competitor falling forward with his right fist pumping towards the heavens and his right leg curled and kicking skyward. The pose was struck after dropping a clutch 15 footer on the 72nd hole of the tournament to seal the deal and best Phil Mickelson by a stroke.
The Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City will be the home of the inaugural Payne Stewart Invitational.
The event set for Dec. 4 at the Gary Player-designed private course (redesigned by Tom Fazio in 2011) set along the St. Lucie River, will benefit the Payne Stewart Kids Golf Foundation. The event will combine competition and charity in honor of Stewart, the three-time major winner and World Golf Hall of Famer who died in an airplane accident in 1999 at the age of 42.
The tournament hopes to feature recipients of the PGA Tour Payne Stewart Award competing alongside fellow stars from the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, LPGA Tour and celebrity participants.
